For serious estuary anglers, catching a dusky flathead that reaches one meter is a remarkable achievement. Unlike other prized fish like barra or kingfish, a flathead measuring over 100cm is truly a rare find.
Last week, angler Eddie Thomas achieved this milestone when he caught a trophy-sized 101cm dusky flathead at Port Macquarie. From his charter with Castaway Estuary Fishing Charters, guided by Patrick Linehan, Thomas's catch emphasizes the area's standing as a breeding ground for some of Australia’s largest flathead. “It was an incredible experience to land such a massive fish,” shared Thomas.
The flathead was hooked on a 4-inch Irukandji Megaprawn lure and was released back into the water after being photographed, ensuring the fish could continue its journey in the estuary.

The notoriety of the Port Macquarie area continues to grow, showcased by recent catches including a striking 96.5cm flathead caught by Japanese client Hayato Ise during a trip with Castaway. This catch further highlights the ongoing trend of substantial fish being reeled in from the NSW Mid North Coast.

The legacy of large flathead in this region is not new. Just last year, Australian TV personality Andrew Hart caught a 98cm flathead while filming an episode of the show 'Hook, Line and Sinker'. “Being able to share that moment on TV was unforgettable,” said Hart, reflecting on the excitement of catching a fish of that size.

Adding to this location's impressive record, guide Patrick Linehan also boasts a 105 cm flathead catch from 2020, which is believed to be one of the biggest flatheads ever captured on a lure in Australia. “Finding a flathead like that is the dream of every angler,” Linehan recalled, emphasizing the thrill of fishing in this extraordinary territory.

The NSW Mid North Coast stands out as a premier destination for anglers seeking their own record-sized flathead. With the consistent upward trend in sizable catches, Castaway Estuary Fishing Charters has established itself as a leading service for those looking to land big flathead.
As fishing enthusiasts continue to flock to Port Macquarie, it’s clear that the area’s reputation for monster flathead remains firmly intact. Eddie Thomas’s recent experience is a testament to the rich fishing opportunities available to those who venture out into its waters.
